〜THE GONG OF SANGGAR PUTRI AYU〜

This evening’s performance staged
by the Teba Banjar a neighbourhood
group from Jimbaran Village with 20
players of all ages, whose main role
is to provide music for the many annual

temple festivals as well as religious
and social processions. The term “gong”
refers to the collection of musical instruments,
which are nearly all percussion.
The musical introduction proceeds five classical dances.


Puspawresti this first dance,
performed by three young girls,
re-enacts the traditional,
regular welcome for visiting deities at temple festivals.
Baris shows a solo male dancer dressed
as an ancient Balinese warrior with
a wave-shaped dagger, a Kris’
There are regular performances of this dance
during “osalan”,
the anniversary of the pura
muaya temple which is the beach
near the resort entrance.


Legong Keraton is a shortened version
of one of the oldest Balinese temple ceremony
performances and the three female dancers
relate a complex story,
displaying the ultimate in female grace.
A maid servant or “condong” enters first
and presents two fans to her mistresses.


Kebyar Duduk relates the transitional moods
of a young man into adulthood,
with many dynamic movements.


Oleg Tamulilingan was created in 1931
specifically for foreign audiences.
It portrays two bumble bees playing in
garden ? a form of courtship dance
by male and femae performers.
